Why Podcast Guesting Beats Another Ad Buy

Why Podcast Guesting Beats Another Ad Buy

Most firms fighting for visibility reach for the same tools: more ads, more SEO, more posts. All fine. None of them do the one thing that actually gets a client to choose you, which is trust. And trust is getting harder to manufacture, because AI is filling the internet with competent, generic content that all sounds the same.

That is exactly why podcasting is having a moment. When anything can be generated in seconds, a real human voice in someone’s ears for 40 minutes is worth more, not less.

I talked with Rachel Allen, a marketing strategist who has done more than 50 guest spots in a single year. She wasn’t even tracking it until recently, then looked and found 2.5 million views and three years of evergreen content, all from showing up and talking to people. For a lawyer, that is the most underused authority play available.

Why guesting works when ads don’t

Ads interrupt. A podcast conversation earns attention. Someone chooses to spend 40 minutes with you, and by the end they feel like they know you.

Rachel books clients who arrive already sold, some from episodes she recorded years ago and forgot she was on. They get on the call and say I feel like I already know you. There is no pitch to make. The relationship did the work long before the phone rang.

For a firm, that solves two problems at once. You borrow a host’s audience and their trust, and you build authority that belongs to you. And you can do it from your desk. No travel, no conference, no networking room. As Rachel put it, no outside pants required.

The part that feeds AI search

Podcasts are also extremely searchable, and that matters more every month. The audio, the transcript, your name, all of it gets indexed. When someone asks an AI tool who they should hire, the answer is assembled from patterns across many sources.

Say the same few things about your work across enough shows and you have handed the machine dozens of sources repeating your name next to your topic. That is how you surface when a client asks a full question instead of typing keywords. Traditional SEO still matters. So does this. Guesting quietly serves both.

To get the full value, record video and audio, pull the transcript, and put it on your own site. One conversation becomes a blog post, a batch of clips, and a page that ranks. Do not let that work sit on someone else’s platform only.

How to guest without it being a slog

The pitch is where most people fail. Rachel’s version is short and personal: one sentence on who you are and why you want on the show, a couple of talking points tied to something true about you, one interesting story, and one thing you genuinely believe. Then proof you are who you say, a LinkedIn link or a one-page sheet. Hosts get buried in vague, aggressive, obviously-AI-written pitches, so a real one gets noticed fast.

On the show, do not script and do not sell. Bring your few points and then just talk. When something goes sideways, and it will, roll with it. Rachel once had her cat knock the whole setup over mid-recording. Owning a moment like that does not cost you authority. It builds it, especially in a profession people already find intimidating. Clients hire the lawyer who feels human and steady, not the one performing.

You don’t need the huge shows

Chasing only the biggest podcasts is a mistake. A show with three thousand engaged listeners who trust the host beats a giant audience that forgets you by lunch. Better still, guest on the specific topics your ideal clients care about, then keep the episodes as a playlist you send when a prospect raises that exact question.

One question lawyers always ask: compliance. The short version, and Rachel teaches CLEs on this, is that as long as you are not promising outcomes, misrepresenting yourself, or aggressively soliciting, you are almost certainly fine. This is not where firms get into ethics trouble.

The legal industry runs a few years behind on this, which is the opportunity. Do it now and you look ahead of the curve while your competitors buy ads no one remembers.

None of this is new. It is the oldest idea in marketing, relationships, dressed for a moment when a human voice is the one thing AI can’t fake.
